Power Grid Corporation of India selects Aluminum Encapsulated Carbon Core (AECC) technology for turnkey reconductoring and grid modernization project

Laser Power & Infra, a TS Conductor regional partner in the India market, will reconductor 164 circuit-kilometers on two high-voltage transmission corridors.

Huntington Beach, Calif. — 26 October 2026 TS Conductor (TS), the pioneer in next-generation advanced conductor technology, today announced that the largest transmission utility in India, Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID), has selected its Aluminum Encapsulated Carbon Core (AECC) conductors for an upcoming transmission grid modernization project. POWERGRID will reconductor and modernize two circuits, totaling approximately 164 circuit-kilometers (circuit-km), with completion scheduled within 12 months.

The commercial order was awarded via TS’s regional partner Laser Power & Infra (Laser Power). POWERGRID will use AECC for a turnkey reconductoring project aimed at improving power supply reliability under the North Eastern Region Expansion Scheme-XXIV, an Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project.

TS’s AECC delivers a 2–3x capacity increase for transmission lines while overcoming the limitations of both legacy and first-generation advanced conductors. It’s the only conductor to combine the workability, durability, and installation ease of traditional conductors such as ACSS with the ultra-low sag, lighter weight, and superior strength of carbon core advanced conductors. The result is a conductor with the reliability that utilities demand, plus the performance today’s power grids need.

With headquarters in Southern California and a second manufacturing facility in South Carolina — opened in early 2026 — U.S.-based TS is finding new ways to meet rising demand from utilities on a global scale. Through TS and Laser Power’s regional partnership, TS manufactures and ships its pre-tensioned encapsulated carbon fiber composite core technology to India for completion of the manufacturing process with trapezoidal-stranded annealed aluminum. Thanks to this partnership and others like it, next-generation advanced conductors are now more accessible across the country.

As the largest electric transmission utility in India, POWERGRID’s project is a powerful vote of confidence in AECC and a testament to utilities’ growing adoption of the technology.

By replacing the legacy ACSR conductor with AECC, POWERGRID will upgrade and enhance grid transmission capacity — with a 2-3x increase — and power supply reliability throughout this industrial region without requiring costly right-of-way expansion or civil redesigns.

“POWERGRID has selected TS Conductor’s AECC technology for a major transmission grid modernization project, marking an important milestone in the adoption of next-generation conductors in India,” said Vivek Kohli, a Mumbai-based technology advisor to TS Conductor and CEO of TS India.

Deepening Indian Market Footprint & Strategic Partnerships

The POWERGRID order is another win for TS’s strategic focus on local manufacturing and dedicated market presence in India. TS operates in India with highly experienced transmission industry leaders working directly with utilities, EPC contractors, and manufacturing partners.

Beyond Laser Power, TS Conductor has established a network of four strategic manufacturing and commercial partners actively bidding on central and state utility transmission projects across India. Current project focus areas include:

  • Long-span applications: Strategic partner Diamond Power Infrastructure Limited is actively pursuing several major transmission grid projects, collaborating closely with TS on long-span transmission line opportunities where AECC’s strength-to-weight ratio offers significant technical and economic advantages.
  • Data center infrastructure: TS and Diamond Power are also exploring targeted opportunities to support the high-density power supply requirements of India’s rapidly growing data center ecosystem.
  • Underground applications: Another TS strategic partner, Universal Cables, is in the process of undergoing type testing and will soon be ready to deploy AECC conductors via its turnkey extra high voltage underground cable projects.

As reconductoring becomes a core pillar of India’s grid modernization roadmap, TS Conductor and its domestic partners offer utilities a proven, locally manufactured solution to resolve transmission bottlenecks rapidly, sustainably, and cost-effectively.

Transforming Grid Modernization with Next-Generation AECC Technology

AECC delivers key upgrades far surpassing the structural vulnerabilities of earlier generation composite conductors:

  • Aluminum encapsulation: Encases the pre-tensioned carbon fiber core in a seamless aluminum sleeve, protecting against micro-fractures, moisture, and galvanic corrosion.
  • Higher capacity and efficiency: Doubles to triples current capacity over traditional ACSR while cutting line losses by up to 50%.
  • Low thermal sag: Maintains safe ground clearances under high thermal loads using existing tower infrastructure.
  • Standard handling: Installs with standard field practices and conventional hardware without risking core damage.

“Modernizing existing corridors with AECC is the fastest way to solve transmission bottlenecks as electricity demand accelerates,” said Jason Huang, PhD, CEO of TS Conductor. “This deployment with POWERGRID underscores the global momentum behind AECC as the benchmark for grid efficiency and reliability.”

Advanced Epoxy Systems: Engineering and Proving Thermal Stability in Encapsulated Cores (Part Two)

A composite core spends its life inside an aluminum encapsulation that keeps moisture, oxygen, ultraviolet, and ozone away from the resin, and the same barrier that locks those out also locks in anything the resin gives off.

Advanced Epoxy Systems: How Resin Chemistry Determines Thermal Stability (Part One)

Conductor evaluation concentrates on the carbon fiber core, and for an obvious reason: the fiber carries the load, and its strength-to-weight ratio is what lets a composite core beat steel at a fraction of the weight. But the fiber can't do any of that on its own. It sits in a cured epoxy that holds the filaments in alignment and moves load between them, and how that epoxy behaves as it heats is what sets the limit on how long the core keeps its rated strength.
